Snow Removal

Top 5 Things To Look for in a Snow Removal Contractor

1. Reliable & Prepared

A prepared snow removal contractor will be able to handle anything from 5cm of snow up to 50cm or more. Last winter in the Oakville, Burlington and surrounding areas saw record snow falls. A reliable snow removal service will provide you with an estimated time of arrival based on how much snow is on the ground and exactly what will be done (snow plow, shovel and/or salt applications).

2. Insurance

Always make sure your snow removal contractor is insured! This would seem to be a fairly obvious concern, and one that you might think is generally taken care of by the snow removal contractor. However, depending on the type of insurance your contractor has, you could actually be held liable in the event of a slip-and-fall-accident on your property. Ensure that your snow removal contractor has at least $5 million liability insurance, or your insurance rates could increase by 20-30% over the next several years.

3. Trained & Happy Employees

Landscapers work hard. I’m sure you’ve seem them out in the summer, slaving away on cutting grass or building larger scale landscape construction projects in your neighbourhood. While winter will inevitably provide more days off for landscapers, when they’re called in for snow removal, the shifts can be grueling. Make sure your snow removal company will follow proper safety standards by providing enough rest during larger storms. Our employees also complete snow and salt safety courses run by SIMA and Landscape Ontario to ensure they are always up to date with the latest safety standards and guidelines.

4. How Much Does It Cost?

We all want a bargain when purchasing goods and services. However, while ‘snow removal’ is not exactly something you really want to pay for, like everything else in life, you get what you pay for. Generally speaking, the lowest price is not the best when it comes to hiring a professional company to work for you. Costs can run up in the winter due to employees wages, machinery, repairs, tools (shovels) and even boots and gloves. Always look for the best price from the most reliable company.

5. Professional Company = Professional Services

If you’re uncomfortable or uneasy about a certain company, do not work with them. Chances are you’ll regret signing that contract and wish you had listened to your initial instincts. Professional companies that have been in the business for a decade or more are typically a good bet. They’ve been in the business long enough to be able to deliver professional services and survive the turbulent business of landscaping. Always work with a company that you can contact, and that will contact you back with answers to your questions.
